How to Get an RFC in Mexico
Your complete guide to obtaining Mexico's tax identification number — who needs one, what to bring, and what to do next.
What is an RFC?
The RFC (Registro Federal de Contribuyentes) is Mexico's tax identification number, issued by the SAT (Mexico's tax authority). Every person or company with taxable income or economic activity in Mexico must have one.
Who needs an RFC?
- Mexican residents with income
- Foreigners who own property in Mexico
- Foreigners renting property
- Business owners
- Employees (auto-assigned by employer)
- Vacation rental hosts
- Anyone issuing or receiving CFDI invoices
Documents Required
- Valid ID (passport for foreigners)
- CURP or immigration document (FM2/FM3/Residente)
- Proof of address in Mexico
- Email address
- Phone number
How to Get Your RFC — Step by Step
- Schedule an appointment at your local SAT office via sat.gob.mx, or use the online portal if you have a valid CURP.
- Bring all required documents — originals and copies.
- Complete the SAT registration form with your personal and fiscal data.
- Receive your RFC number. Your e.firma (digital signature for filing) can be obtained in a separate appointment.
Note for foreigners: The SAT process can be confusing without Spanish language skills. Many foreigners work with a Mexican accountant to navigate registration and choose the correct tax regime from the start.
What Tax Regime Should You Choose?
Your tax regime determines how you file and what you can deduct. The most common regimes for individuals are:
- Honorarios (Professional Services): For independent professionals and freelancers. Deduct actual expenses.
- Arrendamiento (Rental): For rental property owners. Option for blind 35% deduction or itemized deductions.
- Actividad Empresarial (Business Activity): For business owners and traders. Full deductions, quarterly advance payments.
- RESICO (Simplified): Flat rate 1–2.5% on income, minimal paperwork, limited to certain income thresholds.
What to Do After Getting Your RFC
- Set up access to your SAT portal (Buzón Tributario) — you'll receive official notifications there.
- Register for CFDI invoicing through an authorized PAC (invoice provider).
- Schedule your first monthly declaration — due by the 17th of each month.
- Work with an accountant to set up your bookkeeping system and stay compliant.
